Professor Merab Dvali – the ophthalmologist with a half century clinical, scientific and educational experience. In 2002 Prof. Dvali was awarded with the National Prize from the Government in the fields of science and technology to highlight his significant scientific work for the development and implementation of the eye microsurgery in Georgia. In 1992-1993 Prof. Merab Dvali was awarded the “International Friendship Medal of Peoples” for his outstanding contribution to the development of ophthalmology in the People's Republic of China. Prof. Merab Dvali has introduced numerous innovative treatment methods and has educated great number of ophthalmologists in Georgia.

• Prof. Merab Dvali was first among Georgian Ophthalmologists to perform cataract phacoemulsification with Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation (1975)
• Prof. Merab Dvali founded the first Excimer Laser Center in South Caucasus (1999)
• Prof. Merab Dvali was the first in the world to perform Excimer Laser Vision Correction (LASIK) in children (2000)
• Prof. Merab Dvali performed the first phakic intraocular lens (ICL) implantation in Georgia for the correction of refractive errors (2004)
• Prof. Merab Dvali was the first to introduce innovative methods of Keratoconus diagnosis and treatment in Georgia: implantation of the Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (2003) and Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (2007)
